Muxtape Is Gone - Enter Favtape

Mixtape from http://favtape.com/drewie123/EDM by drewie123

In previous post I have praised Muxtape. I mostly liked that service for its clean UI, great ease of use and the instant play of songs. In my opinion those three things are quintessential to an online browser based music service. When Muxtape got shut down by the RIAA I spent some time not listening to anything while at the office just out of solidarity for the Muxtape peeps (that’s the kind of guy I am). Unfortunately, I can’t seem to hold out any longer (sorry guys).

The “new” Muxtape is called Favtape. Biggest differences lie in the assortment of music. Back in the day on Muxtape (yes, in tech a couple of weeks ago surely can be referred to as “back in the day”) you just uploaded whatever you wanted to listen to but on Favtape you have to rely on what the search engine Seeqpod finds. If I understand things correctly that’s where they get their content from together with Last.fm and Pandora. If  they (Seeqpod) get shut down or entangled in a lengthy legal battle with the RIAA for providing copyrighted material, Favtape might face the same destiny as their buddies over at Muxtape (indirectly). I know that they’ve already been sued once by Warner Bros.

As far as assortment goes Favtape is nothing more than mediocre. I say that because I’m personally not into the iTunes Top 50 Chart and the stuff that’s on it. I mostly listen to house and techno music and for those genres Favtape isn’t exactly ideal, but it works.

To have a listen to a few of tunes I like and managed to find on Favtape you can check out the widget above. If you’re interested in the widget itself I can say that it’s running the Gigya Wildfire widget distribution network.
