Obama Vs. McCain - The Social War

I’m sure that a fair majority of the people living around the world are aware of that the United States of America got a fresh new president by the name of Barack Hussein Obama. His victory speach was really something else. If you haven’t seen it, check out the video below. It’s about 20 minutes long but it’s worth every single minute. Trust me. The man is an excellent speaker.

I read in the papers this morning that Obama outspent McCain 3 times over. It’s safe to say that if you manage to attract that much more campaign contribution, you got a pretty sharp edge over your opponent. One other factor that really came through when analyzing Obamas campaign strategy was the amount of emphasize put online. Never before have online channels been leveraged as significantly during a presedential campaign in this one. To somewhat be able to quantify this we can sum up some of the stats of the two candidates and indirectly the resonance, engagement and attraction they created in the social online space. Thanks to Jeremiah Owyang for the numbers.

Obama Social Network Stats: Facebook: 2,379,102 supporters, MySpace Friends: 833,161, Twitter: @barackobama 112,474 followers

Obama YouTube data: 1792 videos uploaded since Nov 2006 (average over 2 a day) Subscribers: 114,559, Channel Views: 18,413,110

McCain Social Network Stats: Facebook: 620,359 supporters, MySpace Friends: 217,811 Twitter @JohnMcCain (is it real?) 4,603 followers

McCain YouTube Stats 329 videos uploaded since Feb 2007 (about 2 a day), Subscribers: 28,419, Channel Views: 2,032,993

One really interesting question to ask is whether these two account will continue to live or rapidly die down. That would be a definite fail.
